The Chemical Decomposer breaks down items into their core elements (single atoms such as Oxygen or Hydrogen) and compounds (groups of atoms such as H2O). Once the Decomposer is powered and provided with a sufficient number of Test Tubes, place the item to be broken down in the top slot. The elements and compounds produced by the process will appear in the lower inventory of the Decomposer. Some items have a higher probability of producing elements. To find out which items produce which elements or compounds,and what the chance of production will be for each item, use a Microscope.
Produced elements and compounds can be placed in a Chemical Synthesis Machine to either re-create the original item, or used with other elements to produce a completely different one!
